Morning Workouts

Call me crazy, but I think I like working out in the morning?

Over the past two weeks, I’ve not only convinced myself to get my butt out of bed an hour earlier, but I then proceed to put on my workout gear and get my limbs in some sort of coordination that mimics what we know here on Earth to be exercise. Physical activity. Sweat and muscle. At 6 in the morning. And I’m enjoying it?

Like I said, call me crazy.

But what’s not crazy is checking it off my to-do list, and being able to come home after a long day to a glass of wine and some couch time rather than trying to motivate myself to go get in a workout.

If it’s raining, or I have limited time, I’ll do a short yoga video from Reflexion. But most days I go out for a run. Normally when I go running after work/internship, I’m thinking about things that happened that day, sometimes over analyzing situations. Exercise should be a time to de-stress! But in the morning I can just kind of be with my thoughts and let my brain do it’s thing. So, the other day I came home and wrote down everything that came to mind during my run.

Things I think about while running at 6am:

1) Why did my neighbor ask if I was going running or jogging? Is there really a difference?

2) It’s so effing humid. I feel like I’m swimming. Does running in this make my lungs conditioned more or less?

3) Aw look at all the baby ducks! I wonder what would happen if I tried to take one home with me. Would momma duck go ape-$h!t ?

4) These other people out running, I wonder what time they have to go to work?

5) Did Andrew wake up yet? I bet he slept through his alarm again.

6) I think I want eggs for breakfast. But I also want something cold. A smoothie? But I want eggs. I really want eggs. Probably gonna be a smoothie though.

Obviously, not a whole lot of intelligence in these thoughts. But it seems to make the miles go by quicker. I think I might just stick with the morning workouts.

Are you a morning workout person? How’d ya get in the habit?

  1. I like working out in the morning too. Not sure how coherent my thoughts are, but hey, that means you don’t even realize you’re working out, right?

  2. That’s crazy that I see a post like this after I just worked out in the morning for the first time and LOVED it !!! It’s awesome. I feel so much better that I don’t have to convince myself to go after work and feeling like a lazyass when I decide to lay on the couch all night. I think I’m hooked! Great post :)

    • Isn’t it great?! The first time I did it, I was like “alright I probably just didn’t hate that because it was my first time, just wait til the next one I bet it will suck!” and then I kept doing it and realized that I was still liked it everyday. Hah it’s like I didn’t even believe I would be okay with it

  3. I’m totally, 100%, for sure a morning workout person! Half of your workout is complete by the time you actually wake up, you only have to shower once if you workout in the AM, and I think the best part - like you mentioned - is the random thoughts going through my head! Haha… I seriously think of the weirdest things in the morning. Plus, I love planning my breakfast and looking forward to it on my run :)

    • It’s so great that you’re still half-asleep, it’s mechanical at first but then once you’re awake you’re totally in your groove!

  4. I love morning workouts! I started just doing a couple days in the morning, but gradually that morphed into all my days haha It gives me the energy I need to have a productive day and is a great way to kick start the day! I also love that now I have the afternoons after work free and can relax/ go out with friends/ take a leisurely walk…just have some time to wind down which is always nice!

    • It TOTALLY makes my day start off on a better foot. And I love love love coming home and just sitting rather than scrambling to get my workout in

  5. In college, I was definitely a morning workout person (esp during quarters when my earliest class wasn’t till 9 or 10)…It made me feel so awake and alert for the day! But my love of that alert feeling definitely loses out to my love of SLEEP these days. I have trouble getting to sleep before 11:30, and I like to have at least 8 hours!!
Also I like working out on my lunch break because it breaks up the day :) And I totally laughed out loud at your convo with yourself about eggs vs smoothie haha!

  6. I’m not a morning workout person at all, but I really would like to be! I just find it tough with trying to wake up early & then being hungry & trying to fit eating something in before I workout. Do you eat before or after your run?

    • Nahhh, I mean if I’m starving I’ll grab a handful of cereal or granola, but eating before would just take too much brainpower haha. I wake up at 6 and by 6:10 I’m out the door. I do get hungry like half way through the run but I survive, and it makes me LOVE my breakfast all that much more!

  7. I love your running thoughts haha. I have run early a few times this past week and while it’s harder for me to get out there and do it, I always feel better when I do! I think about my breakfast the most!

    • I spent 5 minutes this morning staring at my ceiling trying to convince myself into going back to sleep, but my body flung itself out of bed and by the time I could understand what was going on I was out the door. I feel so much more accomplished when I just DO IT

    • It is SOO much better weather in the AM! Especially rainy season here in FL, it’s like almost always raining in the afternoon so I miss all of that, it’s great

  8. Lately my schedule allows me to work out in the later mornings which I have been absolutely loving. But I’m about to have a huge wake up call (pun intended) when I need to start running at 6 AM again. But you’re right, I think it’ll be nice to get it done first thing and not worry about it later. I totally think you should try bringing a baby duck home.
